Hearing aids and custom ear protection are only as good as their fit. Poorly fitted hearing aids are uncomfortable, ineffective and can reduce patient compliance, while custom ear protection that doesn’t fit well won’t protect well.
At Sidney Sound & Hearing Services, we take ear impressions for each new hearing aid or custom ear protection set. We want all of our customers to have the perfect fit, and custom earmolds and impressions are the way to ensure that.
How Does It Work?
Taking an ear impression is a simple, painless process that is as valuable as it is easy. One quick appointment, and you’ll be well on your way to hearing better and enjoying life again.
Here’s how it works:
Step 1: First, we clean the ear. We want to make sure there are no blockages that can adversely affect the fitting.
Step 2: We insert a foam plug deep into the ear canal, which acts as a stopper for the molding material. A thin string attached to the plug helps us easily remove the entire mold when it’s done.
Step 3: We mix a silicon-based solution and pour it into the ear canal and the outer ear.
Step 4: We press a flat surface against the ear and the protruding silicon to help it keep its shape as it dries, which usually takes 5 to 15 minutes.
Step 5: When the silicon is dry, we remove the mold via the string attached to the plug.
That’s it! We now have a mold with which to work, and soon you’ll have a hearing aid or piece of custom ear protection uniquely fitted to the exact dimensions and intricacies of your particular ear.
